Littérature française, Astudiaethau Celtaidd, Breizh
I am an academic researcher with a background in modern languages – my first area of expertise is French literature, especially that of the nineteenth century. I have a particular interest in Brittany.
My approach to the subject has always been textual analysis, for instance close-reading of poetry and other literary texts.
I have specialized in comparative studies
- By that I mean looking at cultural exchange as it is manifested in literary texts, e.g. the relationship between the two literatures of Brittany (French and Breton) in the 19th and 20th Centuries; and I am also interested in and have worked on the cultural interface between Welsh and English literatures.
My work is underpinned by a strong interest in various theoretical frameworks e.g. postcolonial studies (one of my books is entitled Postcolonial Brittany), translation studies (my work on Brittany also draws heavily on translation studies), and also ecocriticism.
All these interests have combined most recently in a major AHRC-funded project called ‘European Travellers to Wales, 1750-2010’; details here http://etw.bangor.ac.uk/
